Comprehensive Guide to Macherey Nagel NANOCOLOR® Ozone Standard Test

6, Jan 2025

The Macherey Nagel NANOCOLOR® Ozone Standard Test Kit offers a precise solution for the photometric determination of ozone, catering to both industrial and environmental monitoring needs. Its specificity and ease of use make it an invaluable tool for reliable ozone quantification.

Understanding the Science Behind the Test

The photometric determination of ozone relies on the blue indigo trisulfonate method, where ozone interacts with the indigo compound, causing its blue color to fade. This discolouration is then measured photometrically to quantify ozone levels accurately. The method is highly specific to ozone, with minimal interference from chlorine levels up to 3 mg/L.

Key Features of the NANOCOLOR® Ozone Test:

Measurement Range (mg/L O₃):

50 mm test tube: 0.01–1.00

10 mm test tube: 0.10–1.50 and 0.05–1.50

Wavelength: 600 nm (bandwidth: 5–12 nm)

Reaction Time: 0 minutes

Reaction Temperature: 20–25 °C

Interferences: Resilient to chlorine (up to 3 mg/L) and unaffected by common ions like H₂O₂, ClO₃⁻, and ClO₄⁻. However, chlorine dioxide and permanganate may cause interferences.

Test Kit Components

The NANOCOLOR® Ozone Standard Test Kit includes the following:

2 x NANOFIX Ozone R0 (used for reagent preparation)

2 x 100 mL Ozone R1

2 x 100 mL Ozone R2

Safety Information

Reagent R0: Contains 20–100% potassium indigotrisulfonate.

Reagent R2: Contains 10–20% malonic acid.

Always refer to the provided safety data sheets for detailed hazard warnings.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Preparation of Reagents

  1. Before first use, add one NANOFIX (Reagent R0) to one bottle of R1.
  2. Shake for 30 seconds.
  3. The prepared solution can be stored for up to four months. Prepare the second bottle only after the first is consumed or expires.

Sample and Blank Preparation

For 10 mm Test Tubes:

Step Test Sample Blank Value
Add 1 mL R1 1 mL R1
Add 1 mL R2, mix 1 mL R2, mix
Add 20 mL test sample (pH 1–12), mix immediately 20 mL distilled water

For 50 mm Test Tubes:

Step Test Sample Blank Value
Add 0.5 mL R1 0.5 mL R1
Add 1 mL R2, mix 1 mL R2, mix
Add 20 mL test sample (pH 1–12), mix immediately 20 mL distilled water
  1. Fill up each sample and blank to the 25 mL mark with distilled water and mix again.
  2. Immediately pour into cuvettes for measurement.

Measurement

Use NANOCOLOR® photometers (refer to manual: test 1-85) or PF-12Plus/PF-12 photometers (refer to manual: test 5-85).

For other photometers, verify the factor using standard solutions.

Important Notes

For consistent results, ensure uninterrupted and speedy work during sampling to avoid ozone loss.

Always use glass containers instead of plastic to maintain sample integrity.

The test kit can also be applied to seawater analysis.

Storage and Disposal

Storage: Keep the test kit in a cool (< 8 °C) and dry place.

Disposal: Contents of cuvettes and flasks can be safely washed into the drain with plenty of water.

The Macherey Nagel NANOCOLOR® Ozone Standard Test Kit is a robust and reliable tool for ozone analysis, offering precision and efficiency. Its versatility across various water types and resistance to common interferences makes it a must-have for laboratories and field operations alike.
