Under suitable conditions anionic detergents react with methylene blue to form a colored complex which is extracted with an organic phase. The reference standard is methyl dodecylbenzene sulphonate.
Detergents are surface-active substances which can be classified into anionic, cationic and nonionic groups. They can be found in municipal and industrial waste waters.
